Nul homme n’est une île, com­plète en elle-même ; chaque homme
est un morceau du con­ti­nent, une part de l’ensemble ;
si un bout de terre est emporté par la mer, l’Europe
en est amoin­drie, comme si un promon­toire l’était, comme si
le manoir de tes amis ou le tien
l’était. La mort de chaque homme me dimin­ue,
car je suis impliqué dans l’humanité.
N’envoie donc jamais deman­der pour qui
la cloche sonne : elle sonne pour toi.

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the con­ti­nent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promon­to­ry were, as
well as any man­ner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death dimin­ish­es me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And there­fore nev­er send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
