Les soirs d’hiver,
ma grand’mère,
qui n’avait plus toute sa tête
(une par­tie s’en était retournée vers la Bohème),

éta­lait des jour­naux sur le sol de la véran­da
pour que les four­mis, dis­ait-elle, puis­sent s’y gliss­er,
comme sous une cou­ver­ture, et rester au chaud,

et moi, que pour­rais-je me souhaiter,
si ce n’est, une fois frap­pée par l’éclair des années,
d’être comme elle, avec ce qui lui restait, tout cet amour.

On cold evenings
my grand­moth­er,
with own­er­ship of half her mind-
the oth­er half hav­ing flown back to Bohemia-
spread news­pa­pers over the porch floor
so, she said, the gar­den ants could crawl beneath,
as under a blan­ket, and keep warm,
and what shall I wish for, for myself,
but, being so struck by the light­ning of years,
to be like her with what is left, that lov­ing.
